The mandolin is an eight-string instrument tuned in the same manner as a violin. The mandolin was the instrument of choice of Bill Monroe, who is generally considered the father of bluegrass music. Modern mandolin styles depart significantly from the style of Monroe, with artists such as Mike Marshall, Chris Thile, and Andy Leftwich pushing the boundaries of the instrument.
